That's me!

That's me!... I'm Luis Contreras, el profesor ...I was born in Santiago de Chile and the most of my life I have lived in this city. ...I'm a real and pure “santiaguino”.

- In the 80´s I studied for 4 years Advertising and Marketing at Universidad del Pacífico. After finishing “my first studies” I worked for ten years as a “free lance” for different and important Advertising Agencies like McCann Erikson, Young & Rubicam, Prolam, Wunderman Cato Jonson, etc. All the time in the research and marketing area.

- In the 90´s...while I was working in Advertising I began with my studies of languages. I started by myself with english for some years and then german for 6 years at Goethe Institut , the official Institute for language and german culture in Santiago. After these 6 years, at the end of 1997 I got an scholarship to improve my german at Goethe Institut in Germany. So, the 1st of may of 1998 I took the plane to Düsseldorf. That´s how I started a new and one of the most important and unique experience in my life.
I lived almost two years in Germany. I spent my first period in Düsseldorf trying to improve my german and most of all learning the german way of life, spending my time together with my classmates and celebrating life with a lot of beer. It was Germany naturally!. After that I visited Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne...etc. where I spent some months visiting my friends.
After this trip I came back to Düsseldorf and finally I landed in Duisburg and I stayed there almost one year. I made a lot of things in Duisburg, I worked for the Center of Music and Culture at the Gerhard- Mercator Universität, helping to organize concerts and cultural activities. At the same time I gave private spanish lessons all around the Ruhrgebiet and Düsseldorf while I took also part of the german for foreigners courses at the University of Bochum. And finally I started producing “latino events” for a multicultural Bar and Bistro for students , “bei Keko”, in Duisburg, where every thursday evening was devoted to different southamerican countries: the cuban night, the brazilian night, the peruvian night and the chilean night....of course and there you had the chance to taste the typical drink and hear the music of each country.

- At the end of 99 I came back to Chile. Inside myself I had the feeling that I didn´t want to work in Advertising anymore. I do did it!.....And then I started to look for a new job and I found it at Tandem – the international worldwide net of language schools where I work now....but first I had to prepare my knowledge about my own language in order to became a certified Spanish instructor.

- I´ve been working at Tandem since year 2000 and I teach spanish. The students come from all over the world, the most of them are from Europe, but we also have students from Brazil, Japan, China , Australia, Canada, USA, among others. It has been an unique, fulfilling and enrichable experience. Sometimes I feel like it was a very long trip around the world without taking a plane!
